My apologies once again for not updating. We've been busy! This morning, Mrs. Jones came to do some work with us on empty number lines. Our number sense is excellent! We learned an easier way to subtract something like 289 from 500. We jump from 289 to 300 by adding 11. Then add 200 to get from 300 to 500. We add 11 + 200 to get 211, which is the answer to 500 - 289. That's so much easier than the algorithm. After she left, we did some work with word problems and determining if you add or subtract in a problem. This will be our focus for the next unit. We will be working with bar models for this unit. Stay tuned for more on that!
In reading, I introduced a new work job using the iPad. It's called Write About and students choose a picture and a prompt to compose on the iPad. We will be uploading these to our personal blogs, instead of posting to my Kidblog. We will learn how to upload on Friday. Very exciting!
Students are also learning how to revise their Write About Reading from last week based on comments I have made on last week's work. Lots going on!
In word work, we learned 5 new word wall words. 4 of the 5 have long i followed by silent e. This is the phonics rule for the week. Finally, in writing this afternoon, we answered a question for a writing prompt and then did Weekend News. Students shared their published pieces with the class.
New homework went home today. Thanks for your help with this.
