Thursday

We did a really FUN thing today in the computer lab!!!  It's called Storybird and it's a digital storytelling website.  The kiddos loved it!  They can access it from home if you like.  It's very popular in 2F.

During reading, we did a lesson on schema.  Students learned what that is and how they have a lot of it for something they know a lot about.  This helps them make connections.

We did a Making Words activity in Word Work. The word was destroy and the concept was a vowel dipthong (2 vowels together making one sound: oy).

Tonight there is a Math in Focus night at MSS.  It's for all K to 5 kiddos.  Starts at 5:30, hope to see you there!

Wednesday

Mrs. Jones came in this afternoon to remind us of the Math Night that is happening at Maple Street School on Thursday. It is from 5:30 to 7:00 and it is for all grade levels up to grade 6!  I will be there and would love to see you there.  If you have questions about what our math program is all about, this is the place for you!  Please think about coming if you can.

In math this morning, we tackled some heavy duty word problems having to do with measurement.  This week we will wrap up this unit and look to discussing mass and volume.

We talked about the Second Grade Play as well today in music.  This is coming in May and the kiddos have been practicing like crazy! I think they are pretty excited!

In reading, we read Ira Sleeps Over and made some connections from the book. We started a new read aloud: Trumpet of the Swan.  Mrs. Kaplan came in this afternoon while I went to a meeting. She did some word work with the class as well as writing workshop.

Monday

Greetings 2F Families,

We had a quick day today but packed lots of great stuff in!  First, we began our day with Morning Meeting.  Next, Mrs. Jones came in to do some mental math with us. Next, we had a quick snack and then went to the play at the Capitol Center. It was about the life cycle of the butterfly. They used giant puppets and shadow puppets. There was some music in it too.  We had a nice compliment from the bus driver for our behavior!  By the time we got back, it was lunch already!

This afternoon, we finished sharing from Morning Meeting and read My Father's Dragon. Next, we did our shared reading: March Chicken Soup with Rice. We talked about parts of speech and different word meanings. Finally, we did our work jobs. Some friends, wrote about a book they read; some wrote on their blogs; some wrote in journals; some read; some went to the library.

Have a great Monday!

Thursday

Due to the shortened day, we had a bit of a zigger zagger schedule. We began our day with snack and went right to morning meeting. It is the 121st day of school today!  We had quick shares and then went to computer lab.  Today in the lab, we did 2 things.  First, we chose something for our portfolios and wrote the reflections. I'm trying to get kiddos to be more reflective in their comments about the assignments that they've chosen. Also, in computer lab, I introduced students to Moby Max. They have a log in to this site and I had them take a placement test for math. This will be the work we do on the computers during math stations next week. The placement test determines which Common Core skills are needed for instruction and gives them lessons on these, totally based on how they performed on this placement test. I'm excited about this!

In word work, we did a challenging activity with 'r controlled' vowels and vocabulary. Also, this afternoon, we did reading and writing to end the day.

Did you know your child can access his/her own Kidblog site and upload pictures, writing, etc?  Don't worry, everything that he/she wants to post goes through me first!  I have to approve it by reading and looking at it.  If your child would like to try to do this at home and doesn't know how, please let me know.  I can help!  It's a pretty cool thing.  Some of our classmates have already done it!

It's been awhile!

Hello 2F Families,
I sincerely apologize for my time away from this blog.  I thought updating once a week would be better, but to be honest, it hasn't for me!  Once a day works for me... it's in my mind, it's part of my reflection on the day.  So I will try to become more regular in my updates.

Did you know that you can follow this blog and get an automatic email every time I update this site?  If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the home page it says "Subscribe: Posts".  Click on this and put in your email address.  Each time I update the blog, you will get an email saying so. I do this for my youngest daughter's class and it works wonders.  Please let me know if you have difficulty with this.

Report cards went home today. Please review them. Let me know if you have questions or if you need clarification about anything. If you could sign the envelope and return it, that would be great.

On Monday, March 24th, we are going on a field trip to Capitol Center for the Arts in the morning. We will see a play about insects. In the spring (May) we will study about insects. This is a good kick-off to this unit, even if it's a bit early.

We are finishing up studying magnets. We've learned that some materials are attracted to magnets, and some materials are not. We've also learned that magnets come in all shapes and sizes. Also, that magnets have poles. This has been a fun, hands-on science unit where we've done experiments and kept a journal of our findings.   After this, we move into our study of weather.

In reading, we've focused a lot of our time on reading nonfiction. The Common Core is very strong in this area. We've read many biographies in reading groups and learned about lots of different people.  At this time, we are beginning to learn about metacognition and what goes on inside our heads when we read. Students are learning how to be more aware of their inner thoughts as they read. Today, we listened to a song and talked about our connections.  All the while, we always refer back to the text to find evidence. For example, I asked students to make connections but they needed to refer to the line in the song that gave them that connection.

Our informational reports about Arctic and Antarctic animals are finished.  Students loved this project! We are now moving into the genre of opinion writing. For this, we are focusing on writing letters to others about the books we are reading.  Currently, students needed to think of a memorable character and tell something about him/her in letter form. Again, they are referring back to the text to cite examples that back up their opinions about these characters.

Finally, in math, we have finished with multiplication and division and are moving into measurement. Students are learning about meters and centimeters. I am working with some in small groups trying to solidify the concepts of multiplication and division, based on the results of their tests. I will also be working on making addition and subtraction facts to 20 solid.  This is a must-have skill before leaving second grade.

Sorry for the lengthy post.  I will be better about updates!
