February 10

Hello 2F Families!

We had a busy week last week.  With the snow day mid-week, we were making up for lost time!  Students are continuing their study of multiplication and division. We are putting their knowledge to the test by working on word problems involving these operations. It really tests their understanding when they can look at a problem and decide whether it is a multiplication or division story problem.  We will be testing on this soon and moving into another chapter of multiplication.

Tomorrow is the 100th day of school!  We will do some fun math around this topic.  Today we had Mrs. Jones come in and do work with the 100 board. That was fun! We did puzzles.

In writing we are working on our nonfiction piece about the Arctic or Antarctic animal. Lessons have included how to write descriptively inside nonfiction, how to order your notes so that they make sense in a paragraph and today was how to elaborate!  Great stuff.  The pieces of writing are coming along! We will be typing the final products.  In fact, we have started typing pieces and revising as we go.

Our work in reading is revolving around problem and solution in a story. Our write about reading is focusing on this skill this week.

We have begun a new science (Yahoo!) unit on Magnets.  We will do some experiments and activities around this topic in the next weeks before vacation.

Please remember Valentine's Day is Friday. Our party will be in the afternoon. Thanks for the sign ups of donations!  I think we are all set.  The class list went home for names of classmates. Let me know if you need another one!

Have a super week!

February 3

Happy February!

We have lots going on!  Students are working hard in writing to turn their notes on their Arctic or Antarctic animal into writing that is pleasurable to read.  This is a tough task!  We are working through it with an example of shared writing on the polar bear.  Today's lesson was about creating a scene and incorporating facts into that.  We have drafted our Tables of Contents and opening paragraphs last week.

In reading, we are finishing up with identifying character traits and moving onto identifying the problem of the story and the solution, one of our report card standards.  In reading groups, students are reading nonfiction and identifying important parts/main ideas. Many are reading biographies in reading groups.

For math, we are working through division.  Division is presented as repeated subtraction as well as equally sharing in groups: the opposite of subtraction.  We are laying the groundwork for multiplication and division. It may seem easy for some, but it is very important that they have a true understanding of what multiplication and division are.

In word work, we have focused on open and closed syllables in words.  We are also working in small groups based on phonics rules/vocabulary instruction.

A class list went home today for the Valentine's Day party. We will be having a party on Friday, the 14th.  Please let me know what you'd like to contribute for the party.  If your child chooses to do cards, please have him/her make one for everyone in our class.  Thank you!
