Monday

Happy Monday!  Sure was nice to go outside for a midmorning break!  No snowpants, hats, boots and gloves makes it much more efficient!

This is the week before vacation. Please let me know if you are leaving early to go somewhere as I may be doing some assessments and wouldn't want anyone to miss them!

In math this morning, Mrs. Jones came in to do some activities with money. This is still difficult for many and any help at home counting coins would be great.  We also did an Aimsweb assessment. I am impressed at the amount of children who have mastered the second grade computation standards!  It's great!

We made a cloud book with cotton balls and did our weather journals. We also read a passage about weather and answered some questions.  This required us to infer the meanings of some words (good practice for standardized tests).

In writing, we are busy with Weekend News, letter writing to persuade, and mapping out our slide show presentations for computer lab.  Students are enjoying the Storybird site.  I have upped the ante a bit more this week. Before anyone publishes any story, they must clear it through me.  I'm finding some sloppy grammar and spelling in these stories. We talked today about how the Storybird stories need to be polished stories.

Have you figured out how to get an email when I update this blog?  Please let me know if you need help. I think with my sporadic updates, this is the best way to keep in touch.  Thanks to everyone who loaned a movie for us to choose on Friday. We had fun wearing PJ's and watching Rio.

Monday

Last week was a very busy week!  We have been learning about weather.  We've discussed types of clouds and different types of weather.  Students are keeping weather journals.  Today, in keeping with our discussion of fact vs. opinion, we wrote one factual statement and one opinion statement about the weather after recess.  In writing, we determined what factual statements about the weather and then what opinion statements about the weather are. This brought forth great discussion. Our shared reading is a song about the Water Cycle. We discussed words like precipitation, condensation, and evaporation. We are learning a lot about weather.  Kevin Skarupa will be impressed when he comes on Thursday!

Mrs. Jones came for math today. We worked on money using coins. We will continue this as it is not an easy concept for some. Any help at home you can give by counting coins would be great!
